Austin, Texas- hey guys! it’s been a really amazing month since i returned from the games! just wanted to let you know that i’m still going to keep up with the site and give you an idea about where i see this going…

first things first… i want to thank all of the children, teachers, and administrators back in Birmingham for letting me come and share with them. to be honest, i was extremely nervous about the whole thing. i didn’t really think people, much less short attention-spanned kids, would want to hear what i had to say. but after it was all over, i want to do it again! it was so cool! i am still waiting to hear back from a teacher or two in order to get a media release for a child. then, i’ll put the pictures from my visit up here!!

while home, i also got to spend some time with my nephew (B-dub (baby wyatt)… i’m hoping that nickname sticks!!), visit friends, and spend time with family. it was nice, but way too short. i had a late start getting back because my good friend, Jeff Cutrer, got married the weekend before. it was a pretty ceremony and an awesome reception, both of which were right down the road from where i live. i left birmingham sooner than i’d hoped because they were going to honor the longhorn olympians at the UT vs. Rice football game. that was a special experience for me because i had dreamed about it since i saw the 2004 Longhorn olympians recognized during my first couple of weeks on campus.

ok, i’m back in austin for good now. i’ve started a somewhat structured routine in preparations for the 2009 season the past couple of weeks. and as for this site, i think it would be neat for you guys to see a little of what i do on a day-to-day basis. so i may take my camera along for a run, a workout, or weightroom session… who knows?

i’d like to hear what you guys want to see… so just leave a comment on this thread and i’ll see what i can do!

Austin, Texas- whew! what a long week!!! i’m back in the US and settling into my new apt. i got my internet and computer set up, so i thought i’d catch up on all the questions that racked up my last two weeks in China…

Corey asks…
what type of workouts do you use to stay in shape?

workouts that help you “stay in shape” are completely different than workouts that “get you in shape”. ones that i use to stay in shape are pretty simple. usually just some fartlek runs only lasting about 25 to 30 minutes. i consider how my body is feeling while i’m doing them. meaning, i back off when i feel bad, and push it when i feel good.

Bobby asks…
what kind of diet are you on (if one at all)? What do you try to eat/drink, and what do you try to stay away from? Supplements? Also, what were you PR’s in high school (in the dec. events)?

my decathlon event pr’s in high school were: 1st day- 10.83, no LJ, no shot, 6′2″, 55.26. 2nd day- no 110h, no disc, 15′3″, no jav, no 1500.
as for my diet, i try to keep it simple. i eat when i’m hungry, and make sure there’s enough protein in what i’m eating. if there isn’t, then i will drink protein shakes. i stay away from fast food, soft drinks, and caffeinated beverages.

Sheril asks…
How do you feel that your faith in God has helped to prepare you for being in China and representing the USA?

my faith helps me sleep at night. i’m happier, calmer, and more wise than i used to be. not only did my faith prepare me to be there, but it sure was what brought me there. His timing is perfect and grace amazing. it obvisously goes deeper than that, so i recommend going to BaptistPressNews.com

Tom asks…
Any thoughts on your dad’s new haircut?

a little back story. my dad has had the same haircut for 30+ years. no one remembers what he looked like back in the day with his east coast surfer golden locks! well, before going to the US Olympic Trials, we made a bet. if i made the team, he’d shave his head. well, i made the team, and he lost the hair. it was quite the cathartic weekend. my sister had just given birth to his first grandson earlier that day!

Sam asks…
Whats your most painful running workout?

my most painful workout would have to be what we call “the hill”. and it involves absolutely zero running! we started doing it a couple years ago, and all we do is a series of lunges (forwards, backwards, sideways) and hops/skips/jumps (single leg, double leg) up a 20 meter hill. at some point in the workout, my legs stop working properly and i lose the ability to stand up, haha! i love it.

Austin, Texas- i’m home! well, one of the places i consider home. i missed being so far from home. i missed kolaches and burritos, i missed sleeping in a comfy bed. i missed a lot of things.

i’ve had some time to sit and think about the games. what they meant to me. what they mean for my future. and where i’m supposed to go from here.

first off, i will not be participating in the DECAstar in talence, france. i am pretty worn out and i’ve had a long eventful season. i’m not doing another decathlon, jeopardizing my health and body, just for some spending money. so, here i sit. enjoying the mess out of my vacation!! YES!!

i just moved into a new place here in austin with my best friend, Drew Terry. he was a pole vaulter for texas and our lockers were right next to one anothers for 3 years. and one week into it, it looks to be a great decision. it’s spacious, comfy, in a great location, and, well, awesome.

sometime over the next couple of weeks, i’ll make my way home to Vestavia Hills. hopefully see a football game or two, hang out with my long lost friends, have a “doodle”, eat some queso at sol azteca, and play basketball at the methodist church. but most importantly, spend some time with my family and its newest member, Baby Wyatt “earp” Keever.

it seems weird looking back on the olympics. the OLYMPICS. “THE” OLYMPICS. it was amazing. i’ve looked for more adjectives that make it more than amazing, but you know what? simple, short, sweet… AMAZING. i don’t take anyting negative away from them. sure, it didn’t go as i planned, but ya know, i’ve got better things coming on down the line. i have a new resolve, a new goal, and a new optimism about the years to come.

i compare it to the first time i went to the high school state meet in track. i didn’t win, i didn’t do well at all actually. but i came home and told my mom that i would win state one day. i saw the other athletes and knew that i could compete with them, if not beat them. i’ve done the same thing at every other level of competition i’ve ever been in. the olympics was a jaw dropper. star-struck and naiive.

well, i’ve got some more great years ahead of me, and now i know i can compete with the best in the world… and maybe even beat them.

so here’s to all my supporters!! and here’s another blessed year!!

talk to you guys again soon!!!

love,

The word this morning out of Beijing is Trey has withdrawn from competition. It’s a pretty standard move in situations like this. Trey won’t be out of competition very long as he’ll bounce back in just three short weeks with a meet in France.

The word from Beijing is that Trey is in good spirits and is now turning all his energy towards cheering on his American teammate Bryan Clay on his march towards the gold medal.

A strong showing in the javelin (presently ongoing) should give Bryan enough of a cushion where the 1500 is little more than a victory lap.

Go USA!
